Acupuncture Scar Therapy in Portland

Scars can cause more problems than they look like from the outside. A post-surgical scar that's tight, numb, painful, or itchy isn't just a cosmetic concern — it can restrict movement, affect the surrounding tissues, and create patterns of compensation throughout your body. Acupuncture scar therapy addresses all of this.

How Scars Affect the Body

A scar is the body's repair mechanism after injury or surgery. But scar tissue is different from normal tissue — it's less elastic, less vascular, and often disrupts the flow of qi along nearby meridians. This is why a C-section scar can contribute to low back pain. An appendectomy scar can affect digestion. A knee surgery scar can alter how you walk.

What Acupuncture Scar Therapy Does

Acupuncture works on scars in two ways. First, needles placed around the scar increase blood flow and encourage tissue remodeling — the scar becomes softer, more flexible, and less raised. Second, needles along the affected meridians restore the flow of qi that the scar has disrupted. This often resolves pain and symptoms far from the scar site itself.

Moxibustion adds an additional layer of healing. The warming properties of moxa increase circulation in stubborn, cold, or numb scar tissue — particularly useful for older scars.

Types of Scars I Treat

I work with post-surgical scars (C-section, laparoscopy, joint surgery, abdominal surgery), injury scars, burn scars, and keloids. For new scars, treatment can begin as soon as the wound has closed and your surgeon has cleared you. For old scars — even decades-old ones — acupuncture still produces meaningful improvement.

Herbal Topicals

I may recommend topical herbal products to use between sessions. Ching Wan Hung ointment (a classic Chinese burn and wound remedy) is excellent for newer scars. Yunnan Bai Yao powder supports healing in traumatized tissue. I'll guide you on what's appropriate for your specific scar.

What to Expect

Scar therapy is gradual. After the first few sessions, you'll likely notice the scar softening, reduced sensitivity, and improved sensation in previously numb areas. Pain patterns associated with the scar often resolve over the same timeframe. Plan for a series of 6 to 10 treatments for established scars.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after surgery can I start scar acupuncture?

Once the wound has fully closed and your surgeon approves, typically 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. For C-section scars, I often start at 8 weeks postpartum.

Can acupuncture help a C-section scar?

Yes — very effectively. C-section scar therapy addresses tightness, numbness, itching, and the adhesions that can form under the surface and affect pelvic floor function and low back pain.

Will acupuncture help an old scar from years ago?

Yes. Older scars respond more slowly, but they do respond. Even a 10 or 20-year-old scar can soften and become less symptomatic with treatment.
