Surgery is healing — but healing is hard work. Pain, nausea, fatigue, and slow tissue recovery are part of most surgical aftermaths. Acupuncture helps your body do that work better and faster, with fewer side effects than relying on pain medication alone.
What Acupuncture Does After Surgery
Acupuncture after surgery serves several specific functions. It reduces pain and inflammation at the surgical site. It addresses post-anesthesia nausea. It stimulates immune function (which surgery temporarily suppresses). And it helps your nervous system shift out of the hyperactivated state that pain creates.
A 2014 Cochrane review found that acupuncture significantly reduced post-operative nausea and vomiting — one of the most common and miserable surgical side effects. Multiple studies confirm reduced post-surgical pain and opioid use in patients who received acupuncture alongside standard care.
When to Start
For elective surgery, starting acupuncture two to four weeks before the procedure strengthens your body, reduces pre-operative anxiety, and sets you up for faster healing. Post-operatively, treatments typically begin four to six weeks after surgery (or when your surgeon clears you), starting gently and building as you recover.
Specific Post-Surgical Scenarios
I work with patients recovering from joint replacement, laparoscopic procedures, mastectomy, C-section, abdominal surgery, and more. Each situation is different. Orthopedic surgery recovery focuses on reducing swelling, restoring range of motion, and managing pain. Abdominal surgery recovery focuses on scar therapy, restoring bowel function, and building qi and blood.
Managing Scar Tissue
Every surgery leaves a scar. Acupuncture scar therapy (starting once the wound has healed) prevents excessive scar tissue formation, keeps adhesions from developing, and maintains mobility in the surrounding tissues. See the scar therapy section for more details.
Post-Partum Recovery
C-section is major abdominal surgery, and postpartum recovery is often underserved medically. Acupuncture after a C-section helps with pain, fatigue, milk production, mood, and scar healing. It's one of my areas of real passion — new mothers deserve excellent care.

How many sessions after surgery?
A typical post-surgical course is 6 to 10 sessions over 6 to 10 weeks, though this varies based on the type of surgery and your individual recovery. I'll assess your progress at each visit.
Can acupuncture reduce the need for pain medication after surgery?
Studies show that patients who receive acupuncture post-surgically use less opioid pain medication. This is significant for recovery, as opioids slow bowel function and can create dependency.
Is acupuncture safe after surgery?
Yes, when begun at the appropriate time and with surgical clearance. I avoid needling directly in or near fresh surgical sites and coordinate with your surgical team on timing.
