If your baby is breech at 32 weeks or later, you may be facing a C-section. Before that conversation goes too far, there's a Chinese medicine technique worth trying: moxibustion at acupuncture point Bladder 67. It's safe, simple, and surprisingly effective.
What Is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion uses a smoldering herb — dried mugwort (Artemisia argyi) — to apply gentle heat to specific acupuncture points. The heat and therapeutic properties of the herb stimulate the point and move qi and blood. It feels like a warm, pleasant sensation on your skin.
The Breech Protocol
The point used for breech babies is Bladder 67 (BL67), located on the outside corner of your little toenail. Applying moxa to this point is believed to increase fetal movement and encourage the baby to turn. The best time to use this technique is between 33 and 35 weeks of pregnancy.
A Cochrane review of three studies found that moxibustion significantly increased fetal activity and reduced the number of babies in breech position at birth. A 2014 study found a 60 to 70% success rate when moxibustion was started at the right gestational age.
What Happens in a Session
I apply moxa to BL67 on both feet while you recline comfortably. You may feel gentle warmth and notice the baby moving. Sessions typically last 15 to 20 minutes. I'll also teach you and your partner how to do the home treatment between office visits.
Most protocols involve daily home moxa for 10 days alongside office sessions. The combination maximizes your chances of success.
When to Start
Start as soon as your midwife or OB confirms breech position around 32 to 34 weeks. The window for maximum effectiveness is 33 to 35 weeks. By 36 weeks, there's less room in the uterus for the baby to turn.
Is It Safe?
Yes. Moxibustion at BL67 has no known adverse effects in properly conducted studies. It's non-invasive and doesn't involve any needles. I'll confirm with you that your pregnancy is suitable for this treatment before proceeding.

What if my baby doesn't turn with moxibustion?
Moxibustion isn't 100% effective. If it doesn't work, you still have options: external cephalic version (ECV) performed by your OB, or discussing whether a vaginal breech birth is possible at your hospital.
Can I do moxibustion at home without a practitioner?
Your partner can do the home treatment with proper instruction. I'll show you exactly how in the office. For the initial sessions and correct point location, you should start with a licensed practitioner.
Does moxibustion work after 36 weeks?
It becomes less effective after 36 weeks because there's less space for the baby to turn. Start as early as 33 weeks for best results.
