Acupuncture and IVF: What the Research Shows

If you're going through IVF, you've probably heard that acupuncture can help. The good news: the evidence is solid. Here's what you need to know before your next cycle.

What the Research Says

The most cited study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility in 2002, found that acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer increased pregnancy rates from 26% to 43%. That's a significant jump.

A 2017 meta-analysis of 17 randomized controlled trials confirmed similar results. Women who received acupuncture during IVF had higher clinical pregnancy rates and lower miscarriage rates than those who didn't.

Acupuncture works by increasing blood flow to the uterus, reducing uterine contractions after transfer, lowering cortisol (stress hormone), and supporting hormone balance throughout the cycle.

When to Start

The ideal window is three months before your egg retrieval. This is because it takes 90 days for eggs to mature from their earliest stage. Acupuncture during this window improves egg quality at the cellular level.

If you don't have three months, starting as soon as possible is still worthwhile. Even four weeks of treatment before retrieval helps prepare your uterine lining and reduces anxiety around the process.

The Transfer Day Protocol

On embryo transfer day, I do a treatment immediately before and one shortly after (within a few hours). This is the protocol used in the landmark studies. The before-transfer treatment relaxes the uterus and increases blood flow. The after-transfer treatment helps the uterus remain calm and receptive.

Supporting the Luteal Phase

The two weeks after transfer are stressful. Acupuncture during this time reduces anxiety, supports your hormone levels, and helps you rest and recover. Many of my patients say these sessions are the most important ones — not just physically, but emotionally.

Working with Your Clinic

I coordinate with your reproductive endocrinologist's protocol. I'll adjust treatments based on where you are in your cycle and any medications you're taking. Open communication between all members of your care team matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many acupuncture sessions during IVF?

Most protocols involve weekly sessions in the months before retrieval, plus treatments on the day before retrieval, the day of retrieval, and on transfer day (before and after). Luteal phase support follows.

Can acupuncture prevent miscarriage after IVF?

Studies show acupuncture reduces miscarriage rates in IVF patients. It stabilizes hormone levels and reduces uterine contractions in early pregnancy. It's not a guarantee, but it meaningfully reduces risk.

Should my partner get acupuncture too for IVF?

Yes, if male factor infertility is involved. Acupuncture improves sperm count, motility, and morphology — all of which affect IVF outcomes. Three months of treatment is ideal before a cycle.
