Back pain is the number one reason people try acupuncture for the first time. And for good reason — acupuncture works. Multiple clinical trials confirm that it reduces back pain better than standard care alone. Here's what you need to know.
Why Acupuncture Helps Back Pain
Acupuncture stimulates your nervous system to release natural painkillers called endorphins. It also reduces inflammation and relaxes the muscles around painful joints. Unlike medication, it addresses the root cause — not just the symptom.
A 2012 meta-analysis in the Archives of Internal Medicine looked at 18,000 patients. It found that acupuncture outperformed sham treatment and standard care for chronic back pain. That's a strong result.
Acute vs. Chronic Back Pain
Acupuncture works for both types. If you've just sprained your lower back or wrenched your neck, early treatment dramatically speeds recovery. I often combine acupuncture with Tuina massage and cupping in the same session for fast relief.
For chronic back pain — the kind that's been there for months or years — acupuncture addresses deep-seated patterns. You usually need more sessions. But most patients feel significant improvement within four to six treatments.
What a Back Pain Treatment Looks Like
Your first session starts with a thorough intake. I want to know exactly where it hurts, what makes it better or worse, and how long it's been going on. This helps me identify the root pattern in Chinese medicine terms.
I'll needle specific points on your back, legs, and sometimes hands or feet. You'll rest for 25 to 30 minutes. Then I'll often follow with Tuina massage — a deep-tissue Chinese bodywork technique — and sometimes cupping or gua sha for stubborn pain.
Chinese Herbal Plasters for Back Pain
I often recommend herbal plasters to use between sessions. Wu Yang Brand patches work well for sports injuries and joint pain. Yunnan Bai Yao patches are excellent for bruising and acute trauma. Salonpas capsicum patches work best for cold-type chronic back pain. Ask me which is right for your situation.
When to Come In
Come in as soon as possible after an injury. The sooner you treat it, the faster you'll heal. For chronic pain, there's no wrong time to start — patients feel relief at any stage.

How many acupuncture sessions does back pain take?
Acute back pain often responds in 2 to 4 sessions. Chronic back pain typically needs 6 to 12 treatments. I'll give you a realistic plan at your first visit.
Is acupuncture better than physical therapy for back pain?
Both have strong evidence. Many patients get the best results combining acupuncture with physical therapy or chiropractic care. Acupuncture is especially effective at reducing pain so you can do the rehab work.
Can acupuncture help sciatica?
Yes. Sciatica responds very well to acupuncture. Treatment focuses on reducing nerve inflammation and releasing the piriformis and surrounding muscles that compress the sciatic nerve.
